Article 12
Children have the right to say what they think should happen, when adults are making decisions that affect them, and to have their opinions taken into account.

What is the School Council?

"An elected body of pupils whose purpose is to represent their classes and to be a forum for active and constructive pupil input into the daily life of the school community."

School Council UK

At Middleton Technology School the purpose of the School Council is to involve young people in the life of their school. The School listens to the views of pupils, and this has been seen to have a number of benefits to both staff and pupils.

In a school of several hundred pupils, ‘listening to their views' is easier said than done. Therefore the School Council is the structure which facilitates this communication, and enables our young people to take responsibility for aspects of school life previously considered ‘out of bounds'.

The School Council at Middleton Technology School has been in session for nine years.

The School Council is made up of democratically elected groups of students who represent their peers and become partners in their own education. They make a positive contribution to our school environment and ethos.

What does having a School Council achieve?

Having a School Council can make a positive contribution to every aspect of the school community. It can also help to:

•  Improve academic performance

•  Reduce bullying and vandalism

•  Reduce school exclusions

•  Improve teacher-pupil relations

The School Council meets at least once every half term for 50 minutes. Details of School Council representatives, agendas and action points of meetings can be all be found on this website.
