News updates

June 2007

A Big WELL DONE! To Alex Deniston of 8NPi for coming 3rd in the Rochdale Youth Parliament elections. This is the first time Alex has run and he was ‘pipped to the post’ by two older and more experienced candidates so this really is a huge achievement. Don’t worry Alex, your time will come! Keep up the good work!
Other school council reps involved in the work of the Rochdale Youth Council are Laura and Megan.

June 2007
Chloe and Tom attended a ‘Rights Respecting Schools’ conference which is a United Nations award schools can work towards. The school council will lead the work in this field next academic year. If you are also interested in being involved visit the ‘contacts’ section of this webpage.

June 2007
Next month some reps will be attending the second of the ‘Effective School Councils’ event. They will be working with other high schools on a ‘standard’ that all Rochdale schools will have to meet before they can award themselves as being ‘Effective’. With all your hard work it shouldn’t take us long!

School Council Update – Autumn 2007

October
School Council reps and other interested parties took part in the ‘Right not an Invite’ course in association with Rochdale Youth Service. At the end of the four week course, students submitted their portfolio of work for assessment. Good luck!

November
Alex, Laura, Megan and Jade were invited to attend a ‘Rights Respecting Schools Award’ event in association with Unicef. The event took place in Rochdale and our year 9 reps worked with pupils from other schools discussing the importance of children’s rights and were put in charge at one point! They were real ambassadors for our school. Why not have a look at their ‘Thank You’ card on the school council web page? Well done!

November
The second cohort of ‘Right not an Invite’ has made a really positive start. Keep up the hard work!

School Council Up and Coming Events

• Rights Respecting Schools Award (RRSA)
This is international recognition that we are a school that represents the rights of others. There are schools all over the world applying for this award and at our school the School Council are going to lead the way by taking part in workshops, completing audits and planning lessons! On 12th December 2007 some reps will be meeting with a representative from Unicef to discuss the way forward. Good luck School Council!

• Effective School Council award
The School Council at Middleton Technology School is brill and to prove it we are going to apply for an ‘Effective School Council’ award. To achieve this we have to carry out an audit and put together evidence to show what we do. Good luck everyone!

March Update

On Friday 1st February representatives from year 9, 10 and 11 visited the Palace of Westminster in London. We were lucky enough to be selected for a tour and sat in on a live debate with politicians. A great day was had by all. For further details and photos of the visit see Hannah Markers review in the school newsletter or the display outside H2.

April Update

On Tuesday 15th April school council reps took some Swiss teachers on a tour of our school. Teachers from Switzerland wanted to have a look at the way schools in England are run and the way in we pupils learn. This was a very unusual experience and we gained some great feedback about how our reps conducted themselves during the tour. True professionals!

On Wednesday 16th April school council reps aswell as other interested pupils were involved in the School Skirt and Code of Conduct consultation. Some girls in the school feel that they would like to have a different type of school skirt so Mrs. Crompton set them the challenge of designing their own!

Other pupils felt that the Code of Conduct is a bit outdated and they would like to link it in with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of a Child.

Look out for the new Code of Conduct in September!

For more info on the UN Convention on the Rights of a Child see our Rights Respecting School Award Link on the home page.

Coming up soon….

In May, we will be completing our audit for the Effective School Council Award. In this we will have to complete a mini assessment to prove that we have an excellent school council – we know we are anyway!!

In June, Some reps will be attending the Rochdale Healthy Schools annual celebration and we have been asked to put together a display and a quiz based on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of a Child.
